“They risk becoming the image of a hungry caterpillar.” Gijs de Jong, general secretary of the KNVB, suggested this regarding the possible candidacy of the United States and Mexico to host the Women’s World Cup in 2027.
On Friday morning, the Netherlands submitted plans to host a ‘convenient’ World Cup with neighbors Germany and Belgium. De Jong expressed doubt that the United States’ ambitions to host the Club World Cup in 2025, the Men’s World Cup in 2026 (with Canada and Mexico) and the Olympics in 2028 would have been satisfied.
Nothing could be further from the truth as the United States and Mexico officially announced their joint candidacy on Friday evening.
This means there are three privateers ashore for the 2027 World Cup. Besides the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium, and the United States and Mexico, Brazil is also in the running to host. South Africa has withdrawn as a candidate.
The previous two World Cups were held in the US
The Women’s World Cup has been hosted in the US twice before. In 1999, the host nation won the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, defeating China on penalties. Four years later, Germany were crowned world champions in Los Angeles.
In 2019, the U.S. women’s final against the Dutch team became the fourth straight world champion, making the U.S. a record holder.
FIFA will decide in May 2024 who can host the World Cup.
