The United States is deeply concerned about Paul Whelan, an American being held in Russia. White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said Moscow was refusing to provide information on the man’s whereabouts or condition. Whelan’s family raised the alarm after not hearing back from him for a week, but received reports that he had been transferred to the prison hospital.
Whelan, a former Marine, holds American, British, Canadian and Irish citizenship. He was arrested in Russia in December 2018 and convicted of espionage two years later. He is currently serving a 16-year prison sentence in the Russian region of Mordovia. Whelan has always denied allegations of espionage.
David Whelan, Paul’s brother, said this week that his family had not spoken to him since November 23, but that officials at the penal colony told them Whelan was going to the hospital on November 17 — the day after he visited the Americans and Americans. Irish diplomats, the infirmary was moved.
He didn’t say anything about the infirmary
Whelan spoke to his parents every day between November 17 and November 23, but he didn’t say anything, according to David Whelan. No one has spoken to him since, not until November 24, when Americans celebrate Thanksgiving. “Paul usually calls on holidays, but now he’s missed both Thanksgiving and Dad’s birthday. It’s very unusual,” says David Whelan. Moreover, in the past, he always told his brother he was taken to the infirmary.
“No update”
“We have been trying to get more information about Mr. Whelan’s condition and whereabouts. Unfortunately, we have not received an update on where he is or what his condition is,” Kirby said. “We are deeply concerned and share the fear and anxiety of the Whelan family.” He says US diplomats in Moscow are trying to get more information.
The United States is negotiating with Russia to release Whelan and American basketball player Brittney Griner, but Russia has not given a “serious response” to Washington’s proposals, it seems.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken confirmed that US consulate staff Whelan last spoke on November 16. We haven’t had any contact since then and asked. We try to get it every day,” he says.
