Anthony Fauci will step down as White House chief medical adviser later this year. Still, the 81-year-old infectious disease specialist says he’s not retiring just yet.
Fauci currently heads the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and has spent more than 50 years in government service, including 38 years at the agency he now heads. When he started, under President Ronald Reagan, he had to help outline the approach to the AIDS epidemic.
Since the outbreak of the Corona crisis, he has played a key role in guiding US policy. He clashed several times with former President Donald Trump. With Democrat Joe Biden, the partnership has been great.
According to Fauci, his departure does not mean he is retiring by any means: he himself is talking about a career turn. ‘I am ready for the next phase of my career as I have more passion and energy in my work’. However, he did not specify what the next step would be.
Earlier, Fauci said he would not retire from government service until January 2025, when President Joe Biden’s term ends.
In a response, Biden said he admired Fauci’s ‘invisible energy and scientific integrity’. “His contribution has saved many lives in the United States and abroad.”
