The US administration is taking into account the failure of Ukraine’s long-awaited counteroffensive. Politico reported. According to BNR’s foreign commentator Bernard Hummelberg, it has to do with US domestic politics.
Hummelberg notes that Russian troops are anticipating a Ukrainian attack and are therefore digging in massively. After all, the Americans have made a sort of guarantee to help Ukraine through the offensive ‘and beyond’, he says. “But Biden is getting more and more signals from his own staff that a possible defeat should be taken into account.”
According to Hummelberg, the support for Ukraine in the US Congress – which US President Joe Biden has received so far – is in danger of collapsing. “Especially on the Republican side,” he says. “So if the attack fails, Biden’s advisers fear a significant backlash in the House of Representatives.”

Hummelberg believes that if the Americans reduce or withdraw their unconditional support, this will also have direct consequences for the attitude of European countries. “If they see the US starting to back down, European countries will look more towards armistice negotiations than arms deliveries,” he continues. “So it could have big consequences.”

Provided the attack is actually coming. According to Hummelberg, Ukraine is likely to be busy with diversionary tactics. The Ukrainian interception of the Djnepr River near Kherson may have been a targeted move to mislead the Russians. “All news should be viewed in the context of strategy,” he says. ‘In a war, communication is part of it, and you leak.’ So, the dark appearance of Americans may be a ruse.
