US monitors a Russian ship off the coast of Hawaii. That will make America take notice.
The US Coast Guard has been monitoring a special vessel in its waters for several weeks. It’s about the Russian spy ship Viktor Leonov, CNN learns. It behaves strangely and therefore comes under the American magnifying glass. For example, it sailed without lights in bad weather, did not respond to the calls of merchant ships and made a ‘drag’ impression.
“Not out of the ordinary, but we’re looking into it,” the US Coast Guard said in a statement. And foreign military ships will pass by. The Coast Guard works with the Ministry of Defense to monitor the vessel. Currently, Viktor Leonov is said to be traveling somewhere near Hawaii. The ship previously passed the coast of North Carolina and Florida.
News of the spy ship comes at a time when relations between Washington and Moscow are at a “historic low” due to the war in Ukraine, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Friday morning. “I’m not optimistic about the immediate future,” he concluded.
