There are already 7 out of 7 in the Red Bull report. Will it be an amazing 22 by 22? F1 has not been able to deliver a perfect season, but Max Verstappen believes Red Bull can win every race. “Although it’s very unlikely.”
George Russell had discovered it after barely one race. “Red Bull will win every race this season,” said the Mercedes driver in Bahrain.
For now, the Briton is still right. Red Bull won the first 7 races of the season: 5 for Max Verstappen, 2 for teammate Sergio Perez. Four times it was one for Red Bull drivers.
For example, after less than a third of his 22 grand prix total, Verstappen is already well on his way to winning his third world title.
This weekend, the Dutchman can match F1 legend Ayrton Senna with his 41st win in Canada. Then he just has to put up with Alain Prost (51), Sebastian Vettel (53), Michael Schumacher (91) and Lewis Hamilton (103).
Better than McLaren in 1988?
Will Russell’s predictions come true? For Red Bull, this season looks like the perfect opportunity to win every race for the first time in F1 history. An almost impossible task.
McLaren almost got it done in 1988 with the unapproachable duo of Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna. Barely 27 laps there was no McLaren leading that season. vertigo.
However, Prost and Senna also failed to remain unbeaten for a full season. At Monza, the perfect report faded: Prost’s engine gave up the ghost, and Senna, who was being pursued by Gerhard Berger’s Ferrari, collided with Jean-Louis Schlesser behind him.
Since then, only Ferrari and Mercedes have come close to 15 out of McLaren’s 16. In 2002, Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello won 15 of 17 races, and in 2016 Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg won more than 19 of 21 races.
Verstappen: “It looks possible”
In Formula 1, bad luck comes in a small corner. One technical glitch or one fatal collision could spoil the dream of Red Bull for 22 out of 22. The fact that they are expecting rain and thunderstorms in Canada this weekend could be enough.
However, Verstappen believes in a perfect report. “As it stands now, we can win every race this season,” he said. “But this is very unlikely, because something can always go wrong.”
“It seems possible in pure speed, but we will continue to go to circuits where you work less or where we have bad luck in qualifying.”
The fact that Red Bull can spend less time in the wind tunnel due to going over the budget cap also fuels the hope of rivals that they can close the gap by the end of the season. Especially now that they were able to study the Red Bull floor in detail in Monaco.
However, Verstappen doesn’t worry about that. “We’ll have new ground for ourselves in a few races,” the Dutchman discouraged his rivals. “So it wouldn’t matter much.”
Verstappen is still rooting for Alonso
Verstappen also understands that the entertainment value for fans is not very high this season, but the Dutchman is enjoying it to the fullest. “Was that boring to me? No, it’s the best of all.”
What if things go wrong this season? Then Verstappen knows immediately who to award the victory to. “Fernando Alonso,” he said without hesitation. “He’s a real racer and he deserves it.”
“The Spaniard is a racing machine. If you give another Formula 1 driver a win this year, it’s Fernando.”
