Crunchyroll will no longer offer ad cartoons to non-paying users starting in the Spring 2022 season. Existing content that was previously available for free can still be shown with ads.
The synchronized content on Crunchyroll has so far been available to users with a free account for a week after its release in Japan, with commercials occasionally shown during broadcasts. This build is no longer possible for almost all new content. On the other hand, with a paid subscription of at least five euros per month, users can receive a new episode via the streaming service an hour after the premiere in Japan, so Crunchyroll confirms in a blog post†
There is one small exception, which is a “tasting dish” from the first episodes of a number of cartoons. For the Spring 2022 season, Crunchyroll has picked the series below, with the first three episodes airing a week after their original release on a free subscription with ads. This offer is valid until May 31. After that, the relevant series can only be viewed with a paid subscription. It’s not clear if the streaming service will continue to put together a “demo dish” each season.
This season’s free selection of animated films relates to:
- Spy family x
- couple of cuckoo
- witch dawn
- Tomodachi . game
- Skeleton knight in another world
- Shikimori is not just cute
- The Greatest Demon Lord was born as a typical nobody
- Stuck in the Dating Game: The Otome gaming world is tough on the mob
