Antwerp not yet sure of third place after losing points to Cercle Brugge | Jupiler Pro League 2021/2022

With the Champions Qualifiers approaching, Antwerp could benefit from a home win against Cercle Brugge, who played. The Great Old certainly had the best of the match before the break, but that didn’t create any really big chances.

The focus was mainly on honoring the deceased Miguel Van Damme and the presence of Antwerp’s new technical director Marc Overmars in the stands.

In the last minute, Michael Frey, offside, came face to face with Warlison, but he fired the Brazilian in full. Both teams went to the end of the first half without goals.

After the second half we had chances and the first went against the ropes right away. Fry found Baliquicha by heel and the young attacker eliminated him with precision. Antwerp advanced and created a string of good chances, but forgot to kill the game.

Entering the final quarter, it looked like Cercle was awarded a penalty after a stupid push foul from Seck on Denkey. The offense occurred outside the penalty area and Hotich was forced to attempt a free kick.

The Bosnian gently wrapped the ball around the Antwerp wall against the post, and Dinke followed perfectly and equalized unexpectedly. The home team had to return to the attack, but could not score a goal.

Thus, Antwerp is stuck at 63 points and could lose third place to Anderlecht tomorrow. Cercle’s season is over, and the Bruggelings finished in 10th place.
