Antwerp have been in trouble with their stadium for some time. Much of the stands cannot be used.
During the Champions League, it became clear once again that the club urgently needed to make improvements to the stadium. The club also loses a huge amount of money every year.
On television we often see an empty situation. Not very nice. There have already been some nice proposals to temporarily solve it. Peter Vandenbempt has already mentioned that a creative project could be set up to hang some kind of artwork or large tifo above the stands.
In any case, no major change will be implemented any time soon. Tanja Mentens interviewed Het Belang van Limburg this summer. “Mr. Gheysens, with full ceremony, portrayed me as a Mintjens problem to all who wanted to hear it,” she began in the newspaper. “It was as if the guillotine was ready next to Brabo on the Grote Markt, or the crematorium.”
The landowner was very clear and made serious statements. “I never sell james. Not to the city, not to Giessens, not to anyone. And if I die, my son is not allowed to sell that land either. It’s all officially registered.”
Mentens says he has good intentions towards the club and therefore does not want to sell. “I would rather guarantee that the club will always be able to continue playing football in this box. If someone else takes control of the stadiums, I am not very confident.”
