Mensur Suljovic and Raubi-Jan Rodriguez grabbed the last straw with Austria to qualify for the last sixteen at the World Cup of Darts.
After a surprising 2-4 loss against Denmark, the Austrians needed to win their second game against American duo Jules van Dongen and Leonard Gates. The mission was a success; ‘The Gentle’ and ‘Little John’ won 4-2. The U.S. still has a game against Denmark on Friday evening. If the Americans beat Denmark 4-2 or less, Austria wins. Denmark have a win anyway, while van Dongen and Gates need a 4-1 or 4-0 win.
Japan recorded a hard-fought 4-3 win against Hong Kong and will therefore play a deciding game against Germany. Gibraltar beat Guyana 4-1 to face defending champions Australia to decide which nation advances.
The World Cup of Darts is scheduled from June 15 to 18. The group stage will be completed in the first two tournament days. The top four nations – England, Wales, Netherlands and Scotland – enter the tournament from the knockout stages.
So the Dutch pair of Danny Nobert and Dirk van Duijvenbod will only play on Saturday for the first time. Originally, Michael van Gerwen was due to play Nobert, but ‘Mighty Mike’ had to pull out due to dental surgery. Last year, the Netherlands was represented by Nobert and Van Duijvenbot. Both then clashed in the semi-final against Wales.
