In the fifth stage of the Tour de France, we lost the first riders. Jack Haig did not “survive” from the battlefield over the cobblestones. The Australian had started with very steep ambitions, but could put them away in the first week. The tour also ended for Michael Gogl of Alpecin-Deceuninck.
Haig passed most of the cobblestone stage unscathed, but things went well for the Australian in the final. He was involved in a crash with Primoz Roglic and Caleb Ewan 30 kilometers from the finish.
Roglic and Ewan managed to continue their path, but Haig had to throw in the towel. Deja vu was sore for Dylan Tunes’ teammate, and he also had to leave the Tour early last year after falling in the third stage.
Jasper Philipsen also lost one of his teammates. Michael Google crashed hard in a stunning accident on a cobblestone section. Daniel Oss grappled with scenes along the side and dragged Danny Van Poppel and Michael Google into his trap.
For Oss and Van Poppel, the damage wasn’t too bad, and Gogl was less fortunate and had to finish his run. The 28-year-old Austrian from Alpecin-Deceuninck was taken to hospital.
Gogl crashed hard on the gravel:
