We’ve been playing Barbie for years: skinny, blonde, and inhumanly perfect. Same thing with replacement guy Kane. Toy company Mattel has changed that in recent years and the Barbie doll has become more realistic, inclusive and versatile. These three keywords are also central to the new collection that will be launched next month.
I’m a Barbie girl in the Barbie world. And this world became a little bigger. After all, next month, toys company Mattel is launching a new line of Barbie Fashionistas. A doll that exudes inclusivity and versatility, because in the set you will find a Barbie doll with a headset and one with a prosthetic leg. Kane also participates diligently. A new one is released from those with vitiligo, a skin condition that causes loss of pigment cells.

The toy company has worked with many experts to make Barbie dolls as realistic as possible. American ear specialist Jane Richardson used her expertise on Barbie with hearing aids. “I am extremely honored to be working with Barbie to create a micro-doll with a behind-the-ear hearing aid. The structure of the dolls has also been reworked. Some are smaller in stature, less muscular, or leaner.

Toy company Mattel first announced a few years ago that it values diversity. Since then, the Barbie Fashionistas line consists of about 176 dolls with 9 different body types, 35 skin tones and 94 hairstyles.
In 2019, the toy company released a blonde, blue-eyed Barbie in a wheelchair. In 2020, they unveiled a black Barbie doll with Vitiligo, and a year later, a black doll with an Afro hairstyle was added to the collection. The latter quickly became one of the top five most famous Barbie models in the world.
