BAS makes the decision: the Anderlecht-Racing Genk rematch will not take place

The British Sports Association (BAS) has ruled that Anderlecht and Racing Genk will not have to replay the match scheduled for 23 December.

In principle, this ruling may only be appealed before a civil court.

But in this case, there is a risk of a long legal process that may not be completed before the end of the regular competition and the start of the playoffs. The last day of JPL is March 17th.

Everything remains the same. Anderlecht can keep its three points as of December 23, thus remaining 8 points behind leaders Union. Genk remains in sixth place at the moment and therefore remains involved in an exciting battle for the Champions Playoffs.

Let's go back to December 23, 2023: Anderlecht wins the derby against Racing Genk 2-1, but the visitors are very unhappy.

After a missed penalty kick from Heinen, Sur scored on the rebound, but it entered the penalty area too early. Therefore, referee Nathan Verboemen ruled that the penalty should be re-executed.

But after Anderlecht's protest – why should Genk be allowed to retake the penalty if he himself committed a foul? – Referee Verbomen and VAR referee Nathan Verbomen change their decision: free kick in favor of Anderlecht.

This in turn was met with incomprehension by Genk, because the pictures show how Jari Verscheren was also in the penalty area very early. So in Genk they feel that a penalty was taken from them. A ruling approved by the Referees Department.

Genk lodged a protest and the Football Disciplinary Board agreed that the match should be replayed due to an error in the regulations.

This does not please Anderlecht, which in turn is appealing to the Belgian Court of Arbitration for Sport (BAS). And with success, because the Bass ruled today that the match does not need to be replayed.
