Basic keyboard shortcuts on your MacBook and iMac

Primary keys

There are some basic keyboard shortcuts to memorize because you can use them almost anywhere in macOS. Most of them work well with the keyboard shortcuts you know from Windows:

Leadership + c To copy.
Command+X To cut.
Command + V To paste.
Command + a Select for all.
Command + s To save, and Command + Shift + S to repeat (instead of “Save As”).
Leadership + W To close a tab or window.
Command + x To close an application or program completely (unlike Windows, applications do not close automatically if you close all windows).
Command + Space To open the Spotlight search tool.
Command+Ctrl+S To lock your Mac.

Command+Option+L to Downloads folder.
space To preview the selected file.
Back To rename the selected file.
Command + O To open a specific file in the default application.
Drive + backspace To delete a specific file.
Shift + Command + Backspace To empty the trash.

Shortcuts to applications and programs

App creators and software makers are not a thing of the past, and they realize that it is impossible to memorize a new series of hotkeys for every program. That's why many developers who create software for macOS use the same key combinations. They don't work in every program, but learn these combinations by heart and you'll work a lot faster.

Command + comma To open the active program settings.
Command + F To search for text.
Command + g To then scroll through the results.
Command + Tab To switch between applications.
Command + ` (next to Z) to switch between windows of the same application.
Control+Tab To rotate between tabs in the same window.
