A 54-year-old Belgian tourist has been missing on Sao Miguel Island in the Azores since Sunday. Local media reported this. The 54-year-old man disappeared while walking in Lagoa do Fogo, a lake located in the crater of a volcano. Searches using rescue dogs yielded nothing.
The Azores, officially the Autonomous Region of the Azores, is one of two autonomous regions of Portugal. It is a remote archipelago consisting of nine islands in the Atlantic Ocean.
On one of those islands, the 54-year-old Belgian was walking around Lagoa do Fogo with a companion on Sunday. This is a crater lake surrounding a volcano surrounded by crater rims rising 950 meters above the water.
According to local media, the police said in a press release that the search initially focused on the walking path taken by the man. When they couldn't find him, the search perimeter was expanded “to an increasingly larger area.” The rescue team is also using drones.
“But we have not yet been able to locate the tourist,” the police said. He has now launched a call among residents to share useful information with them.
