Silvio Berlusconi appears to have given up his bid for Italy’s presidency. This move will increase the chances of current Prime Minister Mario Draghi (74) becoming head of state.
Several sources confirm this decline. Berlusconi’s right-hand adviser Vittorio Sgarbi said on the radio on Tuesday that the 85-year-old’s plan to rally support among parliamentarians to become head of state had ended “objectively”. He said Berlusconi was still missing about 100 of the 505 votes needed.
Even Berlusconi now realizes that his mission is hopeless, according to Sarabbi, who noted that the media mogul is looking for an honorable exit through the prospect of introducing another candidate.

Right-wing parties recently pledged support for Berlusconi, who has health problems. He was recently joined by his Forza party and the far-right parties Lega and Brothers of Italy. However, Liga leader Matteo Salvini is said to have hinted that he also wants to support another candidate. Left and center parties prefer a more neutral president.
The centre-right European People’s Party (EPP) also supported Berlusconi, who sits under that banner in the European Parliament, his candidacy. The former head of government regularly appeared in court, including the infamous bunga bunga parties with young women.
The president is elected by both chambers of parliament and district representatives. 80-year-old Sergio Mattarella will retire after seven years, and the vote on his successor will begin early next week. This procedure can take days.
