British military spy satellite launched – Business AM

The Ministry of Defence has announced the successful launch of the UK’s first military spy satellite, called Tyche. The “advanced” satellite is designed specifically to take images and videos of the Earth’s surface during daylight hours. Tyche is part of the MoD’s programme to support military operations, monitor natural disasters, map the environment and track climate change.

Tyche was launched on Friday by a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, and is the first step in the development of a future constellation of satellites that will enhance the UK’s intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities. The satellite, roughly the size of a washing machine, was designed and manufactured in the UK under a contract worth around €25 million awarded to Surrey Satellites Technology Limited.

Further expansion planned

The launch is seen as a crucial step in enhancing the UK’s intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities, particularly in light of the ongoing war in Ukraine. The Ministry of Defence said the use of space was “critical to military operations”.

Surrey Satellites Technology Limited received the first signals from Tyche just hours after launch, confirming the satellite had been successfully launched into low Earth orbit. The 150kg satellite is expected to remain operational for five years.

Tyche is the first satellite wholly owned by the Ministry of Defence and represents a significant milestone in the development of the UK’s space capabilities. The successful launch is expected to pave the way for further expansion and enhancement of the country’s intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities.
