Tour of the Basque Country: Phase III
end
Jonas Vingaard has taken his hangover out of Paris-Nice. The Tour winner showed himself the best climb on the final climb of the third stage of the Tour of the Basque Country. Behind the Dane, his rivals led each other’s hurdles. Satisfying victory for the leader of Jumbo-Visma, who can also wear the leader’s jersey.
The third stage of the Tour of the Basque Country could be a classic of the Ardennes: along the way the peloton had to overcome many steep climbs, the finish was compared by many riders to the Huy wall.
A leading group of 6 managed fine weather in the early hours, and Remy Cavagna and George Zimmermann were caught 35km from the finish.
And then attacks rained down: first the Belgian Lorenz Huez tried. He got Mollema and Chaves.
They were relieved shortly thereafter by a new trio. Knox, López, and Chávez again put up a lead of about 30 seconds.
However, this remained a playable lead, as they still had a steep final climb ahead of them. Ed Schilling had to release before that, losing his captain’s jersey.
Then James Knox tried it on his own, but fell completely silent at his feet. Juan Pedro López had ranked better, and he was caught last.
But this is where things went wrong. while
