Anyone attending Ed Sheeran’s concert in Heysel tonight should consider a road trip. On Friday evening, before the party, and especially after it, people had great difficulties getting out of the parking lot (C). It’s not the first time it’s been so difficult. “10,000 cars want to leave at the same time, it’s not possible in fifteen minutes,” says the city of Brussels.

“I queued for an hour and didn’t go even 100 metres.” No one in attendance says so, many visitors have expressed their displeasure on Twitter and Facebook. At some point, some visitors got impatient. They even called emergency services. Many visitors say it took 1-2 hours before they finally got out of the parking lot.

At the Brussels Gallery – owned by the city of Brussels – they are aware of the situation, but also ask for some patience. “Park C is fully booked on Friday evening,” said Carol Bunsen, a spokeswoman for Brussels Mayor Philippe Claus. This means that 10,000 cars, serving about 30,000 visitors, were parked. All of these people arrive around the same time and also want to leave at the same time. This leads to long waiting times.”
The Brussels Expo is using a circulation scheme for traffic flow that has been in place for some time. “It takes two hours for a fully-filled parking lot to free up again,” Bunsen says. “That’s really long. But it’s not just the cars that have to get out of the parking lot. Other traffic also has to be regulated and there are also a lot of pedestrians on the road at those times who want to go home in other ways.”

political problem
Parking C in Heysel also appears to be a problem at a political level. We can solve this situation in one, two, three. The car park is located partly in the Brussels region, but also partly in Flanders. To find a solution to this, many political levels have to consult.” There are also alternatives to events at King Baudouin Stadium. There is a shuttle bus and there is also plenty of public transportation, including a studded night train. There are several free parking spaces for bicycles.
Ed Sheeran’s concert tonight is not currently sold out. So the organization also expects fewer cars and fewer problems in parking C. However, more staff and police will be deployed anyway to get party-goers away more quickly.
