China eliminated home nation Australia from the finals

China became the second team to reach the finals of the Women’s Basketball World Cup in Sydney on Friday. The Chinese women beat host Australia in their semi-final with a thrilling 61-59 (halftime: 36-30) win. The final will see the USA face off at 8am Belgian time on Saturday.

Australia edged out the Belgian Cats 86-69 in Thursday’s quarter-final, but the Australian women had a much tougher time against China. China went on a midfield sprint in the second quarter (23-13), but Australia looked dangerous even after the break. It was only in the last seconds that the Chinese women were able to make a comeback.

Xu Han was the star with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Liwei Yang (18 points) also contributed. For Australia, Stephanie Talbot’s 12 points and 10 rebounds weren’t enough.
