In China, agriculture is making a comeback in a big way: The state expropriates industrial areas to grow corn and soybeans. The goal: self-sufficiency as Beijing grows concerned about disruptions to the global food supply. It is worth noting that the United States, Russia and Ukraine are among its main suppliers.
Why is this important?
This is an element of China’s long-term strategy that drives nearly all of its international actions: The Chinese government strives for autonomy, whether in energy, technology or food. For example, Beijing excludes the possibility of putting pressure on China by controlling access to certain resources.Context: In a world where the supply of strategic resources can no longer be guaranteed overnight — as has been seen recently with Russian oil and Taiwanese and Japanese microprocessors — China is leading the way. Since 2021, the country has been striving to ensure its food security by not being dependent on imports. At least 170,000 hectares of new land has been set aside for agriculture.
