Gustav Nelson

1 – 0

The club and Gustav Nilsson are unloading. With his first goal for the Blue and Black, the Swedish striker finally gave Club Brugge their first win of the season. Ten minutes from time he decided the top-of-the-table clash against Antwerp with a penalty. The dark clouds over Brugge seem to be disappearing.

Club Brugge – Antwerp in brief:

  1. key moment

A careless moment, a youthful sin. With ten minutes to go, Doumbia-Vermant ran into the box and fired the ball into the penalty area for Club Brugge. Lammens made an excellent save before De Kuyper’s shot disappeared completely into the air as Nelson converted flawlessly from 11 metres.

  2. Man of the match

A penalty goal was clearly rewarded. Gustav Nilsson was decapitated. The Swede did not make a convincing impression against Antwerp and even caused the club’s fans to grumble, but his first goal for the Blue and Black gave the national champions their first three-pointer of the season.

  3. distinct

3 out of 18. That is Antwerp’s painful record in their last six meetings with Club Brugge. This includes four defeats at the Jan Breydel Stadium. It has been since March 21, 2021 since Antwerp managed to win again at Club Brugge. After that, in eight visits to the club, they have lost no less than seven times and only managed to get a point once.

Nelson hits the crossbar, Antwerp hit by Mignolet

The euphoria of a 19th national title was completely extinguished at Club Brugge after they picked up just one point from 9 – their worst start in 60 years. Against Antwerp, who started well with 6 from 9, the pressure was on.

The club started the game with plenty of pace and energy and came close to making it 1-0 after fifteen minutes. Nelson managed to head the ball in from close range after a good cross from a very excited Seys, but Lammens cleverly hit the bar.

The toughest saves of the first half were made by the Antwerp goalkeeper, most of the saves were made by his team-mate at the other end. Mignolet saved long shots from Cherry and Kirk, was smart when Jansen appeared in front of him and ran away when Kirk decided to make a single push from close range.

Antwerp fully recovered after the club’s impressive start, although just before half-time we had to take notice when the virtually invisible Skov Olsen suddenly demanded the spotlight. Lammens fell on his long shot.

The sin of youth Doumbia destroys Antwerp

The second half became Gustav Nilsson’s half. Initially, the Swede had caused growing discontent among the club’s fans with some unfortunate behaviour, but it did not reach the Thiago scenario.

With ten minutes to go, Nelson took his chance. With an excellent save, he prevented Lammens De Kuyper from making it 1-0, but immediately afterwards Doumbia ran recklessly over Firmant and the ball hit the penalty spot. Nelson took responsibility and scored his first goal for the club.

Perfect timing for the home side, especially as Antwerp had come close to scoring just before. Sherry had the best chance, but she wasted it with complete freedom at the far post.

Nelson was suddenly released after his penalty and took his chance with a long-range effort, and an excellent save from Lammens kept Antwerp in the game. At least for a while, because shortly afterwards Odoi received a second yellow card and the game was over for good.

Despite two good performances, Antwerp took 0 out of 6 in the big games against Anderlecht and Club Brugge. The national champions can breathe a sigh of relief after their first three-pointer of the season.

Reactions from the Antwerp camp: “This is very sad”

  • Sini Lamins: “It’s very sad. We worked hard for this for 80 minutes. We played a relatively good game and didn’t waste much. We also created chances from time to time. It’s very sad to concede a goal like this. I think both teams deserved a point at times, and the club had the upper hand, but we knew that beforehand after the 1-0, we even started looking for that goal, but it was too late. Young mistake by Doumbia for a penalty “I can say that, it’s a pity because if we had dropped points here and against Anderlecht, we could have definitely taken a point in both games.”
  • Vincent Janssen: “Both teams had chances, maybe the best chances for us. We shouldn’t have lost here. I was close once in the first half, the rest of the time I was basically helping the team. We were up against Anderlecht and Club Brugge who should have won at least two out of six games. It’s frustrating, because these are the important games but we can still look at a strong game and there was no result.

Skouras plays around Lammens and makes it 2-0, but Brugge’s party doesn’t last. Clear offside. Yellow card for Van den Bosch for an earlier foul.

7 additional minutes will be added.

Torches for Nelson

Some Antwerp supporters show themselves from their narrowest side and actually throw fire bombs at Nelson who is lying on the ground. Referee Lothar Dhondt stops the match for a moment.

Red for Odoo

It looks like it’s all over for Antwerp, as they have to play out the final minutes with ten of their own. Odoi receives a second yellow card for a foul on Nelson and is allowed to shower. However, there doesn’t seem to be much going on.

Nelson is close to 2-0!

Nelson has clearly gained confidence from his penalty. He hits powerful shots from outside the box. Only Lammens can turn his shot over the target with his fingertips.

Skov Olsen was sent off after a dismal game. Skoras can finish the game.

Nelson gives Klopp the lead!

And here is Nelson’s first goal for Club Brugge! The Swede converts the penalty flawlessly. The club takes the lead at the perfect moment.

penalty!

Lammens prevents De Kuyper from making it 1-0 with an excellent save, but immediately afterwards Doumbia-Vermant is clumsily brought down inside the box. There is no doubt about it: the ball hits the point.

Doumbia misses Firmant.

The game is over for Sherry. He was replaced by Scott in Antwerp. There are still changes to be made at the club as well.
