Climate activists block private jets in Schiphol and cling to Prado

Climate activists cut gates in the Schiphol car park and circled the tarmac. Their goal: to make sure no private flights can take off from Amsterdam all day, by sitting under planes or restricting themselves to them.

These are protesters from Extinction Rebellion and Greenpeace Netherlands, who have announced peaceful demonstrations in Schiphol for the day. According to the organizations themselves, there were more than 500.

“Schiphol should be greatly reduced,” Greenpeace’s Fayza Olhassan told Dutch news agency ANP. “It doesn’t make sense that so many private flights leave the airport every day.”

Figures from research agency CE Delft commissioned by Greenpleace show that more private flights took off from Schiphol, Rotterdam and The Hague Airport in the first nine months of this year than in all of 2019, the last year before the coronavirus pandemic.
