The period leading up to the second leg of the 1/8 final of the Champions League between Benfica and Club Brugge was turbulent. The club’s fans were attacked on Monday night in several places in the city center’s entertainment districts. Reportedly, scores of Portuguese daredevils, often armed with knives and chains, attacked the Legion of Blue and Black who traveled with them. It happened around midnight.
According to the Portuguese newspaper register A Club Brugge fan had to be taken to hospital. Many Belgians fled or took refuge in a café. Although there were members of the Bruges hard core who launched a counterattack, as the pictures showed. Riot police had to intervene several times to calm things down. Tuesday morning, according to register Two more Brugge fans were arrested for throwing things at the Portuguese police.
Benfica are favorites to qualify for tonight’s Champions League quarter-finals (kick-off 9pm). The Portuguese league leaders are defending a 0-2 lead from the first leg they won three weeks ago in Bruges.
