The supermarket match in Ruggeveldlaan in Deurne will close its doors on March 25th. Colruyt will open a new branch this summer in the same location. “We’ll stay on the same surface, with the same underground and above-ground parking,” says Hanne Poppe, a Colruyt Group spokeswoman.

Another month before the game at Ruggeveldlaan in Deurne, the shop will be closed permanently. So it is also the last branch of the Belgian supermarket chain to disappear in Antwerp. For example, all shops in Merksem and Edegem are closed and the branch announced in Rumst will not be built. Match is now focusing on the southern part of our country and will only have Louis Delhaize left in our area.

According to Els Breugelmans, professor of marketing at KU Leuven, this would be a cost-cutting exercise. “Match has a few supermarkets in Flanders and that makes supplies very expensive,” she says on Atv. “Supermarkets are under a lot of pressure, they have to swallow a lot of costs and then look at where you can save costs. Rising energy, transportation and staff costs also play a role in this.”

In any case, local residents will not have to do without a supermarket for a long time. The match will close its doors on March 25, but a few months later, in the summer of 2023, Colruyt will open a new location there. “We will remain on the same surface, with the same underground and above-ground parking,” says Hanne Poppe, a spokeswoman for the Colruyt Group. “The match will leave the store at the end of March 2023 and then we will begin a full renovation of the store, after which it will open under the Colruyt flag in the summer of 2023.”
