CyclingTomorrow Jumbo-Visma will decide whether to play Wout van Aert in Paris-Roubaix. Van Aert would like to ride the Hell Classic, but it wouldn’t be the last race of his spring. The Belgian champion also added Liège-Bastogne-Liège to his program.
At Jumbo-Visma they think about careful selection. Will they be staying Wout van Aert in Paris-Roubaix? Two weeks after being diagnosed with the coronavirus, Van Aert feels healthy again. He is currently in Spain on a training block to finish his spring in beauty.
Van Aert would like to ride the Hell Classic. The business owner is willing to go along with its leader’s wishes, but is also mindful of the cases of Sonny Colbrelli and Tim Declercq. They developed heart problems after resuming competition (also) quickly after contracting the coronavirus. For CEO Richard Plug, the health of the rider takes precedence over participation in the Roubaix. It is up to the medical staff at Jumbo-Visma to give the green light or not.
For the first time in La Doyenne
The Paris-Roubaix will not be the last race of its spring. Van Aert also wants to start at Liège-Bastogne-Liège a week later. La Doyenne was never on his schedule, but because he missed the Ronde van Vlaanderen and Amstel Gold Race, Van Aert feels mentally and physically refreshed to extend his spring. Participation in Liege does not stand in the way of continuing his season. Altitude training at the tour function is planned as of May only.
Van Aert has never raced in Liege before, but at his best, he definitely has a chance of winning. It will show if he is at his best in Roubaix. If not, it is ideal that you test how far he can go in the future. With former winner Primoz Roglic, Jonas Vinggaard and Tsige Bennott also on the starting sheet for Jumbo-Visma at the only Walloon pitch, Van Aert won’t just have to take the lead.
