Conservation group African Parks has purchased the largest southern white rhino breeding program in the world. More than 2,000 rhinos will be released into the wild over the next decade, the non-profit said.
At the end of April, John Hume put his Platinum Rhino breeding farm in South Africa up for auction as he found himself in turbulent financial waters. According to African Parks, no offers were received, leaving the rhinos at risk of poaching and fragmentation. The Platinum Rhinoceros is home to more than 2,000 endangered species. According to African Parks, this represents 15 percent of the remaining wild animals worldwide.
In a press release, Peter Fearnhead, CEO of African Parks, said the organization has no intention of having a captive rhino breeding programme. However, he says African parks will find a solution for animals so they can “restore their essential role in fully functioning ecosystems.” The CEO added that once all the animals are released into the wild, the Platinum Rhino Project will be stopped.
The conservation organization will work with various governments, funding and conservation partners to release the animals into the wild in various protected areas in Africa.
