24-year-old Tom Robinson from Australia hopes to become the youngest rower ever to cross the Pacific Ocean. The young man, who made the attempt with a homemade rowing boat, must put this dream aside. He was rescued after experiencing problems during his journey.
Robinson has been on the road for at least 15 months. He was found today dehydrated on his locally built rowing boat after it capsized off the coast of Vanuatu. The exact reason behind his boat capsizing is not yet clear.
A cruise ship, notified by authorities after an emergency call from Robinson, was able to rescue the young man. Tamu Tabitao, a member of the team that supported him on his trip, says the cruise ship is heading to Auckland, New Zealand. From there the Australian will fly to Brisbane.
Robinson began his record bid last year when he left Peru in July. He hoped to arrive in Cairns, Australia, in December. The 20-year-old was on the final leg of his journey after leaving the city of Luganville in Vanuatu on Monday.
