Antwerp in the Valley of Tears. At the end of the match against Genk, Richie De Laet landed badly after a header. The Antwerp defender was forced to leave the field with tears in his eyes as he limped. Their farewell match – after 5 years of loyal service to The Great Old – next week in Bosuil appears to be in jeopardy. A dramatic moment that also moved Van Bommel to tears.
There were painful scenes at the end of the match between Genk and Antwerp.
After a duel of headers around the 70th minute, Richie De Laet landed poorly. When he went down, the Antwerp defender appeared to have injured his knee and/or ankle.
It is not yet clear how serious his injury is, but everything indicates that his farewell match is in danger. After five seasons in Antwerp, the defender will say goodbye to Antwerp fans next weekend in Bosuil.
After the match, De Laet – with a rolled knee and teary eyes – sought solace in the away section. But this will still be a firm farewell in a minor key.

His teammates supported him on his way into the catacombs and in front of the microphone.
“It’s very difficult to see him like that,” Zeno van den Bosch said. “We will try to comfort him as best we can. He has taught me a lot on a personal level, on and off the field. I have great respect for him.”
Mark Van Bommel couldn’t even hold back his tears. “Shit, right…”, he cursed angrily in front of Eleven DAZN’s microphone, and then had to isolate himself in the dugout for a while and wipe away another tear.
