Denmark’s Queen Margrethe II has rescinded the princely titles for her son Joachim’s four children to allow them to lead a more normal life. The Danish royal family reported this on Wednesday.

“From January 1, 2021, the descendants of His Highness Prince Joachim will be able to use their titles only as Countess or Countess of Monpezate, with their previous titles of Prince and Princess of Denmark forfeiting,” a statement said.

Joachim, 53, is the Queen’s youngest son. He has four children, ages 10 to 23, from two marriages: Nikolai, Felix, Henrik and Athena.

Alexandra Christina Manley, the mother of her two oldest sons, told BT she was shocked. “It’s like a bolt out of the blue. Kids feel left out. They can’t understand why their identities are being taken.”

The Queen’s four other grandchildren, the sons of Crown Prince Frederick, will retain their titles, but only the eldest will receive a bonus when they reach adulthood. Christian from Denmark is now 16 years old.
