Delhaize and Van Moer Logistics extend transport contract

Delhaize and Van Moer Logistics continue their long-standing cooperation by extending their transport contract. The two companies continue to focus on making their transport activities more sustainable by analysing market developments and evaluating investments.

Long term partnership

The cooperation between Van Moer Logistics and Delhaize began in 2011, when the Antwerp-based logistics provider acquired Delhaize’s transport business Wambacq-Peeters in Zellik. The transport contract has now been extended for a third time, this time until 2030.

“Van Moer Logistics has grown to become a strategic transportation partner for Delhaize. It provides approximately 20 percent of the daily transportation capacity,” says Dirk Hutkietje, Delhaize’s transportation manager.

Van Moer Logistics has an average of 100 trucks and 150 drivers deployed 24/7 at Delhaize. “Our drivers pick up Delhaize trailers from the distribution centers in Zellik and Ninove and transport them to the various Delhaize branches in Belgium and Luxembourg. The new contract focuses on flexible services, providing additional capacity to support the growing number of stores as they open on Sundays,” said Jo Van Moer, CEO and owner of Van Moer Logistics.

In addition, since 2020, the logistics group has also supplied 40 manned terminal vehicles that provide trailer logistics services at the distribution center in Zeleke. Through this long-term and intensive partnership, Van Moer Logistics directly employs over 200 people at Delhaize.

“Such a large group of drivers driving for the same customer requires good monitoring and guidance. Our drivers also have to follow specific instructions for each branch so that they can unload and load properly and safely on site, because our drivers also handle return shipments,” says Joe Van Moer, CEO and owner of Van Moer Logistics.

More sustainability

“We want to make our transport more sustainable step by step in a financially and operationally viable way. This can only be achieved on the basis of a strong partnership, and for us Van Moer Logistics is the ideal partner to achieve this,” says Jonathan Van Dessel, Director of Delhaize.

On the one hand, drivers are personally trained to drive safely and environmentally, and on the other hand, the truck fleet is constantly updated.

Both companies also actively contribute to the EU’s sustainability goals. To achieve this, LNG has been selected as a transition technology since 2020. This can lead to CO2 savings of around 20 percent. As part of their strategic partnership, Van Moer Logistics and Delhaize are committed to evaluating investments on an ongoing basis based on market developments.

In the first quarter of 2025, Van Moer Logistics will deploy five additional LNG vehicles to serve the busy city centres of Brussels, Ghent and Antwerp. A total of 34 LNG trucks will be driven to Delhaize.

Delhaize’s current Director of Transport, Dirk Hutkietje, will retire effective July 31, 2024. Jonathan Van Dissel will continue in this role in the future.
