Al-Ittihad striker Deniz Undav did not give his brightest interview on Thursday night after the first match against Club Brugge. The German was not pleased with referee Laurence Visser’s performance and did not utter his words. He will receive an “official warning” from the Football Association in this regard.

“Beating Club Brugge is difficult, especially if they get help from the referee,” Undav said after the match in front of Eleven Sports cameras. “We played against twelve today, I told the referee.” His colleague Dante Vanzer, interviewed by Undav, seemed to realize he had to step in. “The match is over, Deniz,” his attacking brother calmed down.
The Federal Prosecutor’s Office focused on Undav’s remarks Friday morning. “We deal with everything from media comments to referees and especially when the integrity of referees is called into question,” said federal prosecutor Ebbe Verheijen. “We have decided to notify Undav officially. Because his criminal record is clean and it happened right after the match”, Verhagen explains the extenuating circumstances. With a clear message that it cannot be repeated. Otherwise, we will sue him.”
However, this was not the first time a person had been prosecuted for statements critical of the ruling. This also happened with then-Antwerp coach Laslo Poloni, who questioned referee Bram van Deresche’s impartiality in 2017.
Pro League can also get involved
The Pro League could also consider imposing a penalty on Undav. “What the PGA does is separate from what we do,” Federal Prosecutor Verhagen explains. “Theoretically, a club or player could be sanctioned by us and by the EFL for the same violation. The Football Association is taking disciplinary action and the EFL is monitoring the good order of its organization further.”
It is not yet clear if the EFL will step in after Undav’s comments. An official contact from the Belgian professional club’s interests organization may follow later in the day.
