Destructive storms hit Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia: power outages, traffic disruption and many injured | outside

Severe storms caused traffic problems and power outages in Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia over the weekend. Several people were injured.

Thousands of accidents have been reported in Poland that kept firefighters busy on Saturday and Sunday. Most of the accidents were caused by trees falling on roads, cars, power lines or homes. The winds tore off the roofs of the houses, and the water flooded the streets and basements. Electricity was temporarily cut off for tens of thousands of families.

Thousands of operations in Poland

In Poland alone, firefighters carried out about 2,700 operations from Saturday to Sunday morning, TVN24 TV news channel reported. In the hard-hit southeastern Poland’s Carpathian province, more than 78,000 households in and around the town of Dibica were without electricity on Saturday night, with all four power lines leading to the area simultaneously failing.

As a result, the intensive care unit of the city hospital was evacuated and many emergency patients were transferred to other hospitals. At least five people were reported injured in weather-related accidents in Podkarpackie. In the neighboring Lesser Poland region, firefighters reported that around 150 homes had their roofs blown off, with more than 30 homes completely uprooted. Similar damage was reported in other regions of Poland.

Agricultural damage in the Czech Republic

And in the Czech Republic, more than 30,000 households were without power Sunday morning, as fallen trees and flooding blocked railways and roads. Heavy winds and rains caused great damage to agriculture, especially the hops fields.

Activities in Slovakia

Slovakia also saw significant damage to road connections, especially in the north, where more than 40,000 households were without electricity on Saturday night. The Taser news agency said repairing the damaged power lines in the mountainous forests took a long time due to the difficult locations.
