D’Ieteren Auto is in the top 15 of the largest European automobile distribution groups

As every year, the consultancy ICDP has published the top 50 automotive distribution groups in Europe. The ranking is based on the turnover of the different groups in 2022. The full ranking can be downloaded at the end of this article.

Together, the 50 largest car distribution groups in Europe have sold nearly 4.5 million new and used cars (4,499,262 to be precise) and generated sales of around 144 billion euros.

The only Belgian group in the top 50 is D’Ieteren Auto, in 14th place. In 2022, the Belgian group, which represents 11 different brands and has 29 points of sale, sold 91,871 cars, achieving sales of $3.61 billion.

Other famous names

Of course there are also other names in the top 50 that sound familiar to our Belgian ears.

The top 50 list has been dominated by Swiss group Emil Frey for several years. Emil Frey has been active in Belgium for some time with Autosphère, which sells new and used cars from Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda, Seat, Ssangyong, Dacia and Renault in the provinces of Liège and Luxembourg. More recently, Emil Frey acquired Renault Retail Group and Valckenier Zaventem.

In fourth place came the Hiden company, known in Belgium for its Mercedes-Benz, Toyota and Lexus brands. It is also an importer/distributor for Ineos and Hongqi.

Inchcape, known in Belgium for its Toyota and Lexus activities and which since last year has been an importer for BYD, is in fifth place.

Van Mossel, which has just announced the acquisition of the Mertens garage and thus adds the Volkswagen Group brands to its Belgian portfolio, is in 12th place.

Just behind D’Ieteren are the Swedes Bilia, who have BMW sales points in Belgium.

Cosmobilis, the parent company of BymyCar, is in 18th place. Less than a year ago, this group acquired Mercedes-Benz Europe and Favre.

At the bottom we find Morin (owner of the GMS group, among others), RCM (owner of the Mercedes-Benz Drogenbos and Waterloo, also in Charleroi), Car Avenue (in Belgium: Toyota-Lexus-Nissan, Mercedes-Benz and the Stellantis brands) and the GCA group.
