Dirk Kuyt can’t believe his eyes after another loss: ‘Referees need to realise the consequences of their choices’

Dirk Kuyt had a very hard time with that. “Am I disappointed about it? I don’t want to talk about it, I want to talk about the injustice,” he told DAZN.

“I can take a lot as a person, losing is part of the sport, and we also deal with that as a man. But being treated unfairly is something I find very difficult.”

“Of course they are difficult decisions. So if we look at the penalty we gave, well… I can accept that, obviously it remains an individual decision.”

“But drawing red for Brian Platt when he hit the ball first and then the man? I think that’s very unfair.”

“With all the other decisions, we just have to accept what the referee feels, but if it is overturned and we lose the game as a result, it will have a lot of consequences for us,” he added.

So the Dutchman remained at Berchot’s head in confusion. Many questions were running through his head.

“What are they actually doing? What is going on in their heads?” he thought out loud. “We have been working hard all week and are looking forward to our first win. A decision like this can throw everything back in the trash can.”

“You can hear it from me: I think this is really unfair,” Kuyt reiterated his sentiment. “And if it only happened once…”

“But against Union, one of their players hit the ball with his hand, the incident was filmed by 7 cameras and I still don’t understand why a penalty was not given,” he added.

“The next week, Sanusi got his hand on the ball and it was a penalty. Now we lost again. What’s going on?”
