On October 31, children from different countries will dress at the door. Their curved houses are decorated with pumpkins and lanterns. The kids shout ‘Trick or treat’ and then the residents have to give them candy. Not only children but also teenagers and adults are celebrating Halloween. Everyone celebrates it with a party coming up.

Halloween is derived from ‘All Hallows Eve’, which means Eve of All Saints. It was the night before All Saints’ Day. On this day the dead are remembered.

In 1990, Halloween parties were first organized in the Netherlands. Nowadays, more and more Dutch people are celebrating Halloween, but according to the latest figures from Motivation, the party is not nearly as popular in the Netherlands as in the United States.

In 2018, Halloween was celebrated by 17 percent of Dutch people. Only 14 percent of them went from house to house dressed and with children. Similar research shows that one in four Dutch people do not know what Halloween is.
