Grga Brkic was injured last weekend after falling 150 meters with his cousin’s dog in the Velebit Mountains, near the Adriatic coast.
Rescuers struggled to reach humans and animals through snow, ice and trees torn apart by landslides.
“The friendship and love between man and dog is endless,” see HGSS Croatian Mountain Rescue Service on Facebook. The photo released by rescuers shows the dog curled up over the victim on a stretcher.
“This dog is a true miracle, very friendly and probably loves people more than other dogs,” his owner told the Gutarni List.
The three hikers, accompanied by eight-month-old Alaskan Malamute North, began their descent onto an ice cliff when the accident occurred near the mountain’s highest peak, which is about 1,800 metres.
“The North was laid on the victim to warm him,” HGSS said. “We can all learn from this example how to take care of each other.”
Alaskan Malamutes are dogs with a fluffy coat that are known for their endurance.
