Dortmund is rocking on its foundations. The Germans made a great spectacle at home against Atletico Madrid. Scenario: The score first became 2-0, then 2-2, and finally the score reached 4-2. Thus, Dortmund qualifies for the semi-finals of the Champions League at the expense of the Belgians Witsel and Vermeeren.
Atletico Madrid defended its one-goal lead against Borussia Dortmund. The Spanish team did this with Axel Witsel at the back. Arthur Vermeeren was on the bench for 90 minutes, as was Julian Duranville (Dortmund).
The race started at a speed of 100 kilometers per hour. Sabitzer had a great opportunity. He received the ball right in front of goal, but hesitated for too long, allowing the Atletico player to block the shot.
Less than two minutes later, Alvaro Morata was also unable to open the scoring. He walked alone towards Dortmund goalkeeper Koppel, but his shot went wide of the goal.
Dortmund is strong to rest
The home team had to score and so took the lead. This didn't yield much. A shot from Adeyemi was a catch for Oblak, and Sabitzer kicked high from distance.
In the last ten minutes before half-time, Borussia Dortmund found the acceleration which led to goals.
Hummels played a leading role in the 1-0 scoreline with a brilliant pass. He found Julian Brandt on the outside of his foot. Oblak easily managed to beat him with a shot from an acute angle.
And it didn't stop at that goal in the first half. Ian Maatsen outmaneuvered a few Atletico Madrid defenders inside the box and broke into the goal.
Oblak started well, but Maatsen shot the ball perfectly. The ball entered the goal a few millimeters from the post.
A different approach pays off
Dortmund went to Atletico Madrid and coach Diego Simeone was not going to tolerate that. After the break, he brought three new players onto the pitch: Riquelme, Barrios and Correa.
This paid off, because there was a breath of fresh air among the visitors. They once played football under high pressure and it eventually led to a score of 2-1.
Hermoso headed towards the goal from a corner kick. It could have been an easy save for Koppel, but Mats Hummels clumsily put the ball into his own net.
Atletico Madrid succeeded in qualifying. Substitute Correa initially missed a great opportunity for Coppell, but he scored after an hour of play.
Copil was first able to stop Riquelme's shot. Then Correa scored two goals. Thus the second transformation was a reality.
Sabitzer takes his shot
There was no peace. The spirit of Atletico Madrid was contagious, as Dortmund also found a new courage.
Just 7 minutes after the equalizer, Niklas Volkrug made the score 3-2. Sabitzer sent a quick cross which the striker nodded to the far post.
Extensions then? No, thought Marcel Sabitzer.
The German made a big mistake at the beginning of the match, but he became one of the heroes. He slammed off the edge of the box. Oblak had no chance against the low, difficult shot.
The score was 5-4 in favor of Dortmund between the two matches. The German team achieved two recoveries, but Atletico Madrid was no longer able to do so.
In the final stage, there were two exhausted teams on the field after an intense match. It was Dortmund who came close to the goal several times.
Atletico Madrid no longer had an answer and fell. The defense with Witsel conceded four goals. He and Vermeeren's bench are out.
In the semi-finals, Borussia Dortmund awaits a bigger match with Paris Saint-Germain.
“Thanks to the weather, we were able to continue walking.”
Niklas Volkrug (Borussia Dortmund) expressed his admiration for playing at home: “It was magical. The atmosphere on the field was amazing. This energy allowed me to keep running, just like my teammates. This is how we had the ball and created chances. I think we could have scored more, but today “I'm very happy. If you look at my career, I'm now playing in the Champions League semi-final… I'm going to enjoy it.”
Stage after stage
The End: Dortmund reached the semi-finals
After a crazy rematch, Borussia Dortmund qualifies for the Champions League semi-finals. Before the end of the first half, they controlled the match with a score of 2-0. Atletico Madrid woke up in the second half and the score became 2-2. Dortmund was not impressed. Volkrug effectively took the home team into extra time with a brilliant header and a few minutes later Sabitzer made it 4-2. Witsel and Vermeeren sitting on the bench are out.
Dortmund has begun the countdown
It seems that the German club has qualified for the semi-finals of the Champions League. It keeps Atletico Madrid going and the Spanish club no longer enters the penalty area.
4- Extra time
An additional 4 minutes will be added.
The latest attack from Atletico Madrid is not up in the air immediately. Visitors will need this to enforce extra time.
Great save by Oblak
The ball bounces to Marcel Sabitzer and he swings. The ball passes through Witsel's body towards the upper right corner. Jan Oblak is awake and prevents the fatal blow with a show.
There are no more strikers on the bench at Atletico Madrid. Diego Simeone makes changes in midfield. Saul Niguez, who recently scored against Villarreal, will replace De Paul.
The combination of Bynoe-Gittens and Sancho does not produce a goal chance. Sancho cannot control the ball well enough. Oblak is alert and picks up the ball.
Leaves Volkrug 5-2
The books could have been closed. Niklas Volkrug ran deep and was almost one-on-one at Oblak, but he kicked down the middle, letting the goalkeeper keep Atletico Madrid upright for the time being.
Atletico Madrid must score
There are still 10 minutes left. Atletico Madrid must score at least one goal, because it is 5-4 behind in the two matches.
Borussia Dortmund chooses the way forward to increase the reward. Atletico Madrid must recover after the double blow.
4-2: Sabitzer is now the one who scores the goal himself!
What's happening tonight? For the second time, Borussia Dortmund comes from behind and takes the lead. Marcel Sabitzer now scores his goal after his assist. From the edge of the sixteen he kicks the ball well into the lower right corner.
