On Friday, several places in the Netherlands will commemorate the murder of Pim Fortuyn twenty years ago. The Image of Pim Foundation and the political party Leefbaar Rotterdam, among others, organize a memorial tour and the former Rotterdam politician is memorialized with a symposium at the town hall.
The tour begins at Fortuyn’s former home in Rotterdam and goes to Westerveld Cemetery in Driehuis, where the murdered politician has been buried for several months. Fortuyn was later reburied in the Italian village of Provesano, where he had a second home.
In Media Park in Hilversum, where Fortuyn was shot dead by Volkert van der J on May 6, 2002, former politician Hilbrand Naugen of List Pim Fortuyn, among others, spoke.
Back in Rotterdam, Mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb speaks at City Hall and the annual Pim Fortuyn Prize is awarded to the opinion-maker, politician, or official who best disseminates Fortuyn’s ideas.
Memorial Day ends with a silent trip to the Fortuyn statue on Pim Fortuynplaats, where two minutes of silence is observed.
