Emotional Alberto Dainese: “The plan changed in the last kilometers”

Alberto Dainese sprinted to victory in the eleventh stage of the Giro d’Italia. Italian DSM sprinter Fernando Gaviria and Simone Consone remained in the sprint group. “I also got a lead from Romain Bardet in the last kilometres, we’re a close team.”
The home rider seemed visibly emotional with his Tour of Italy victory. “It feels so good, it’s a stage in Jiro. I really can’t believe what happened.” This may also relate to the fact that Team DSM initially planned to run with Cees Bol, not Dainese. “We changed our plan in the last kilometres, Cess wasn’t feeling well.”
“I stayed very relaxed in that absolute final. I also got a lead from Romain Bardet in the final kilometres, despite him fighting for the general classification. It really shows that we are a close team.”
The enemy itself was very exciting. Only in the last 20 meters did Dainese manage to throw his bike near Gaviria. “I was a bit trapped at first. Suddenly I saw a gap to the left, which gave me good space for the enemy.”
