Lenert van Etvelt makes No longer a part From the Tour of Spain. His team Lotto-Dstny announced this on Thursday morning. The Belgian had been unwell for several days and has now left for Spain.
The team reported that there might be a problem with the bronchi and lungs. Therefore, it was decided to carry out medical tests in Belgium and spare the young rider for the difficult and deadly stages to come.
Van Eetvelt started the Vuelta brilliantly with a strong climb and a close victory on day four. The Belgian, winner of this year’s UAE Tour, looked set to take the lead but fell on stage nine. Things quickly deteriorated after that, with him suffering a number of knocks on the hills.

Van Eetvelt almost hinted at resignation after hellish journey on Wednesday
On Wednesday, Van Eetvelt again lost fifteen minutes to the rest of the field and was very disappointed after the stage. “My legs feel fresh and I feel like I’ve recovered well, but I can’t breathe,” he told the organisation in an interview. “I don’t feel as good as I would like to feel. Yesterday was probably one of my worst days on the bike,” said the Belgian.
“It was hard for me from the first climb. It was like I couldn’t breathe. I asked the boys to register and that I would go in easily,” said Van Eetvelt, who had no response from his Lotto-Destiny teammates. “They kept fighting for me and I for them. But it wasn’t a nice day. I have no idea what went wrong. Research will have to reveal this in the near future.”
