European sanctions imposed on four wealthy Russians will remain in place for the time being. The General Court of the European Union rejected the four’s protest.
The European Union has imposed punitive measures on billionaires Gennady Timchenko and Dmitry Pombyansky and their wives following the Russian invasion of Ukraine. They are said to be close to President Vladimir Putin and have amassed a fortune. The four are no longer allowed to enter the European Union and no longer have access to their assets located in the Union.
The quartet can still appeal after the ruling of the General Court, which is part of the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg.
Not all European sanctions hold up in court. Punitive measures usually require very comprehensive justification, but have been instituted at times with unprecedented speed over the past year and a half.
