He does not spare at all with controversial statements. That's how you describe Hein Vanhisbrouck in the press conference after the draw against Antwerp. Striker Laurent Depoitre in particular – who missed the chance to score the winning goal – was heavily criticized. “It's humiliating,” says the overtime panel.
“I see Patrick Gotts sitting in the room, maybe I can talk to him again, who knows. We had a number of great chances. I think Bate made about 1,000 such inside shots at the far post.”
Hein Vanhisbrouck speaks after the 2-2 win against Antwerp last weekend. the coach KAA Gent are not happy with Laurent Depoitre wasting a big chance at the far post.
“So you're exaggerating, Heine,” Mark van Bommel leapt into the gaps for the striker who arrived too late to slot home the winner.
But Vanhisbrouck's opinion is clear: “So you don't know him. He made more difficult balls. Those are the balls that should always go in. I spoke to Vincent Janssen about it afterwards. He would have gladly gone in, I'm thinking.”
If Laurent Depoiter heard that, he would swallow hard.
The statement didn't go unnoticed in extra time either. Philip Goss puts the pertinent question on the table: “Is this an easy goal to score?”
“It's all about timing,” says Wesley Sunk. “He doesn't expect, whereas you have to be there on time as a striker. Scoring a goal is harder than everyone thinks, because you can't learn timing.”
Peter Vandenemppt also believes that Depoiter assessed the situation too late. He added: “He only accelerates when the goalkeeper misses the ball, instead of anticipating it.”
Well, Vanhisbrouck has a point that his player can – and perhaps should – do better. But wasn't there another way to explain it?
“I have to be honest: I think Heine is good at this,” says Frankie van der Elst. “I love him so much, but here he is hurting Deepwater. It really hurts me. Don't do that.”
“You shouldn't mention those things about Goots and Janssen. I find it very hurtful to Depoiter…” and then Vandenbempt concludes: “It's insulting.”
