People infected with the delta variant of the coronavirus are already highly contagious two days before symptoms appear. This is according to a study conducted by the University of Hong Kong and published in the scientific journal Nature.
The study tested people from the Chinese city of Guangdong who were infected with the Corona virus. There it was found that most symptoms appear about 5.8 days after infection. However, virus particles were detected already 1.8 days after infection. This means that there are two days when you are highly contagious, but you don’t yet know you are infected. In previous variants, the same period was less than 1 day.
“Higher concentration of virus particles”
“It’s hard to stop,” said Benjamin Colling, an epidemiologist at the University of Hong Kong. In a previous study, a much higher concentration of virus particles was detected in the delta variant than in the original coronavirus formula.
According to the researchers, these are the reasons why the delta variant is spreading so quickly.
