Anyone who crossed the Fritterig Terrace in Berkem on Saturday evening might have rubbed their eyes. There was none other than rock star Nick Cave sitting there eating French fries with stews.

On Sunday, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds performed at the Dutch festival Best Kept Secret, but the Australian was seen in Antwerp on Saturday. Fans noticed him on the balcony of Fretirig next to Groen Kwartier, which is run by Leonard Glazema. “I wasn’t at the chip shop, but he reportedly liked it very much.”
Cave entered the chip shop with two men and then sat on the balcony. This tells of Basit Nouri, 24, who was working in the chip shop at the time. “I must admit I didn’t know who he was. I didn’t realize he had to be famous until some people took pictures of him. If I had recognized him myself, I would have asked for a picture.”

A colleague of Basset has translated all the snacks on the menu into English. “They ordered three big boxes of french fries and two pieces of soup,” Bassett says. “Nick how also ate homemade mushroom croquettes. It was a quiet evening at the chip shop. I think they sat on the balcony for about two hours, during which two or three people stopped to take a picture.”
What does the world famous musician think of french fries? “I think he really enjoyed it. I think one of the guys he was with, I think an American, came up next to say they were the best french fries ever.”
