FamousFans of actress Ana de Armas, 34, may sue Universal Film Studios over the trailer for Yesterday. This was decided by an American judge, on Friday, according to the BBC. De Armas played a supporting role in the trailer, but not in the movie itself. Fans are still very upset about it.
Two angry fans felt cheated by Universal when they digitally rented “Yesterday” in January. “Yesterday” is about a musician who suddenly becomes the only one in the world who knows the music of the Beatles. He became an international star with the songs John, Paul, George and Ringo. De Armas had a small role in the film as a potential love interest for the singer. The 34-year-old actress, now known for the Bond film No Time To Die, shot the movie before she became very famous.
The two fans claim they paid $3.99 to see Armas in the movie, but were disappointed. They accuse Universal of cheating with the “misleading trailer”. They are asking for $5 million “on behalf of all affected consumers.” A California judge has now decided that they may continue the case.
Universal argued in court that the trailer, like the film, is an “expression of artistic expression” and thus falls within freedom of expression. Plus, the studio fears a potential case could lead to a flood of similar lawsuits if some of the scenes in the trailer don’t make it into the movie. This is not uncommon, as the finished movie is often not ready when the trailer is released.
But the judge did not agree. He decides that the trailer is an expression of advertising and therefore must correspond to the product the trailer is trying to sell.
