Apple announced a number of new features for the iPad during WWDC 2024. These are the most important features in the iPadOS 18 update!
Read more after the announcement.
iPadOS 18: Features you don’t need (but want)
During WWDC 2024, Apple finally showed off iPadOS 18. This update to the popular tablet brings many new features to the iPad. Most of these functions are compatible with the new functions in iOS 18. Also read this article if you want to know everything about all the functions.
During the keynote, Apple showed that it will change a lot, including on the home screen. This way you can choose the location of the icons yourself (to a large extent) and it is even possible to adjust the colors. The control panel will also receive different upgrades, so you can also adjust the boxes to your liking.
Another notable change is that you’ll soon be able to secure apps with Face ID. The apps you have hidden will then be placed in a special folder in the App Library.
Another change is in the Photos app. This app has received a major facelift. The images will now appear at the top of the screen in a grid. Below you’ll find the different folders and the rest of your library. Many of the well-known functions are still there, but have been given a new look or changed the name.
Apple will also add several animations on the iPad when switching between apps and SharePlay will be updated. For example, you can help your parents solve iPad problems. You can also take over the iPad from them temporarily. The iPad finally got a calculator app, and it’s about time.
Apple is also adding several new features if you like to write with the Apple Pencil. The iPad can then automatically improve your handwritten notes by better aligning the text or by running an automatic spell checker.
Apple intelligence
Apple also offers its own version of AI on the iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Apple emphasizes that it only uses the data locally. Apple wants to signal that your data is always safe.
Apple is adding a new cloud feature called Private Cloud Compute. Apple does not have access to this data and only necessary data is sent to the cloud.
With Apple Intelligence, your iPad has more potential. This will allow your iPad to decide for itself which notifications are the most important and put them at the top of the list. This also works with Mail, so that your most important emails are the first to be seen in your inbox.
You can also create your own images using Apple Intelligence. You can also personalize and assign it to the person you want to send it to. For example, you can wish your dear friend a happy birthday with a photo created especially for her.
Shame: Apple has indicated that only the iPhone 15 Pro (Max) and all devices with the M1 chip (or higher) will receive Apple intelligence.
Genmoji and photo playground
Another great feature is Genmoji, which now lets you create your own emojis. This is very easy. Apple also offers Image Playground. You can choose a number of subjects and then your iPhone will take a photo of them.
You can of course also enter your own claim type and add it to your Photo Stream. You can also add your own photos, which will be included in the final image.
Siri 2.0
Siri also got a new look. You’ll now see Siri as a sort of glowing ball in your iPhone’s wallpaper. The voice assistant has become smarter and can now better provide context between different commands.
Additionally, Siri now has support for ChatGPT 4o. Siri asks you each time if you agree to forward your task to ChatGPT. You do not need to create an account with ChatGPT for this purpose.
You’ll still have to be patient for most of these functions, because most of these new Siri features will be available in the future.
iPads will receive this update
Unfortunately, not all iPads will receive support for the new iPadOS update. As is the case every year, a number of tablets are dropped when a new generation of iPadOS is released. These iPads will receive iPadOS 18.
iPad Pro (M4), iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation or later), iPad Pro 11-inch (1st generation or later), iPad Air (M2), iPad Air (3rd generation or later), iPad (7th generation or later Latest) and iPad mini (5th generation or later).
