Finland sends old acquaintances to the Eurovision Song Contest: The Rasmus, who achieved international success with “In the Shadows”

Rasmus has been around since the mid-90s, and they started as a group of teenage friends, who made music together in high school. Guitarist Pauli Rantasalmi left the group in early 2022. Since then, The Rasmus has been joined by a woman: singer and guitarist Emilia “Emppu” Suhonen.

After international success in Scandinavia in the early 2000s, they spread to various European countries – including Belgium – with their fifth album “Dead Letters”. Her debut single, “In the Shadows” became a huge hit throughout Scandinavia and Western Europe. Especially notable is the penetrating and greedy voice of standoff striker Lori Yleonen.

The group also had success in the UK and is trying in the US, but they can never match the success of that one hit. But to a large part of the European audience, The Rasmus will sound familiar. And both recognition and theatrical experience can be an advantage in a major song contest such as the Eurovision Song Contest.

Finland will participate in the Eurovision Song Contest in the second semi-final, on Thursday 12 May, just as Jérémie Makiese. The Belgian nominee was selected by the RTBF this year. The number by which our country will be represented is not yet known.
