Chinese President Xi Jinping landed his plane in Vietnam’s capital Hanoi this morning. He thus embarks on a two-day state visit, which aims to bring relations between Vietnam and China to a new high. The previous visit was in 2017.
Xi has several important meetings today and tomorrow on his agenda, including with the Prime Minister, the President and the General Secretary of the Communist Party. In addition, Xi will also announce new investments to improve railway lines between Vietnam and China. This makes it easier for China and Vietnam to import and export from each other.
For Xi, the visit is an excellent opportunity to bring Vietnam closer to China. Three months ago, Vietnam hosted US President Joe Biden. The United States and Vietnam then entered into a “comprehensive strategic partnership” with agreements on economics, science and technology.
Xi wants to prevent Vietnam from moving too far on the American side. After news of the US-Vietnam accords, the Chinese president responded that “the future of Asia must be in the hands of Asians.”
