Samsung continues to develop new PHOLED displays for smartphones. These screens made from blue phosphorescent materials consume much less power, which can give your phone a much longer battery life.
Despite technical problems, Samsung wants to use displays with blue PHOLED displays in smartphones, the South Korean news site reported. electrical. Thanks to technology, phones use much less power, which means your battery will run out less quickly. This is possible by adding blue phosphorus materials.
OLED displays currently have red and green phosphorescent subpixels with luminous efficiency of up to 100 percent, while blue diodes with fluorescent materials are only a quarter. In the case of fluorescent, the substance continues to glow for a period after it is illuminated, while in the case of fluorescent, the substance emits its light for a shorter period of time.
Longevity is a big problem
Blue phosphorescent matter can have a significant positive impact on energy consumption. There is only one major problem, which has been in search of a solution for many years: the average lifespan of blue LEDs is much shorter than that of red and green LEDs.
Samsung will not be able to use this technology in consumer products unless the shelf life is sufficient. Researchers from the South Korean manufacturer had already reported in a research paper last year a significant improvement in the lifespan of PHOLED blue screens. So things are moving in the right direction.
When will this be in your smartphone?
Samsung even planned to use blue PHOLED panels in its new foldable phones from 2024: Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Flip 6. But the company did not achieve this. There are still some hurdles to overcome before the display technology actually hits the market.
Despite the problems, Samsung continues to develop, because it wants to be the first in the industry with these new displays within a few years. According to The Elec, you can expect PHOLED displays to appear in new Samsung smartphones starting in 2025 or 2026.
